Project Summary

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group infection of tropical and subtropical regions, especially among the poor, caused by a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasitic worms (helminths). Approved treatment drugs for NTDs are faced with several limitations, such as emergence of resistant pathogens, high costs and toxicity arising from long periods of high dose treatments, which warrant the search for alternative drugs, ideally among natural compounds

  1. Assessing the efficacy of the 3 quinone compounds (22, 31 and 32) from the Ōmura natural compound library against Schistosoma mansoni worms in vitro and in experimental mice models.
  2. Elucidating the mechanisms of action of the compounds in mansoni schistosomula.
